I had a Useful Range of Vision test this morning at UIHC.  The results were that I'm at moderate to high risk of having an accident while driving.  The doctor said that some people who take this test at this point are considered high risk only.  He expects that I will improve since it's only been 4 months since the surgery.

The doctor suggested that I repeat the test in 3 to 6 months.  In the meantime, he suggested I continue practice driving in low-pressure situations around the neighborhood.  Also, Phil took part in an Active Minds study a while ago, and as a result has some software that is identical to what they used for my test today.  The doctor suggested I use this software along with video games to improve my useful range of vision.

Phil suggested that I shouldn't have expected to pass this test with "flying colors", but naturally the results were depressing.

I had quite a long appointment today with the neuro-ophthalmologist at the UIHC eye clinic.

Great news!!  There's been a 50% improvement in my visions since my last appointment.  The doctor was quite pleased as were we.  I will have another exam in 6 months and he said that it's possible to have more improvement by then.

The ophthalmologist suggested that I see a specialist in the Eye Vision Rehab Clinic to discuss driving related issues.  I am scheduled for this on November 27th.  It's possible that this appointment can take the place of the driving clinic at St. Luke's.

Today I had an appointment with a neuro-psychiatrist at St. Luke's.  After an hour-and-a-half of testing he said that he'd give me a a gold star if he had one.  He said that I'm normal --- not sure my kids believe that!!!  He said that before surgery I was probably above normal so apparently I do have room for improvement.

I was really good at the dot-to-dot test and he suggested that I sign up for the $600 driving clinic at St. Luke's as he felt I'm ready for that.  I told him that I've been holding off as I didn't want to pay to fail.  I have an appointment for the driving clinic in early  December.

Tomorrow is my appointment with the neuro-ophthalmologist.  Hopefully, they will have test results equally as good as the ones I got today.

Phil sat in during the testing and he was really jealous.  He wished that he could have been taking the tests.

More news tomorrow.

Today I had an MRI and an appointment with the surgeon, Dr. Greenlee. He was very pleased with the results of the MRI which also made us feel better.  I will have another MRI in 6 months.

He confirmed that the surgery effects were more severe than normal for this operation.  He indicated that only a small minority of patients go through what I did after surgery.  It's one thing to have him tell us before surgery what might happen; it's quite another thing to have some of the possibilities become real after surgery.

We talked about my vision cut which still persists.  He confirmed that it could be a year before it improves if it's going to improve.

He lifted my weight restriction so now I can pick up Jacob if I can catch him. :)

My only restriction now is driving.  I talked to Dr. Greenlee about going to an empty parking lot and practicing my driving.  He thought that would be a great idea.  So, maybe we'll go to the mall parking lot on Black Friday.  LOL  When I feel confident I will contact the driving clinic at St. Luke's for recommendations on starting to drive on a regular basis.

My next important appointment is with the neuro-opthalmology clinic on November 13 for a vision field test.  I hope to find out if my vision has improved since the last test.

Today the occupational and physical therapists decided to turn me loose.  They gave me some tests and are pleased with the progress I have made.  They feel that I have been doing things at home with Phil's help that are just as beneficial to my recovery.

The vision cut is frustrating but I have learned to compensate for it.  It is possible that this will improve over time.

My next big appointments are a check up with the nuerosurgeon and an MRI on Wednesday, October 3rd.  I'm hoping for good outcomes with both of those appointments.

I'll keep you posted as to the outcomes.

Monday, September 17

Today is therapy day, and we got very good news. Linda was cut back from twice-a-week sessions to once a week. The therapists (physical, occupational and speech) were all VERY pleased with her progress. For example, in physical therapy, Linda scored 56 out of 56 points on the Berg Balance
Test, which measures her ability in several different balancing activities.

Today Cassie, Phil and Linda volunteered at Sophie's school. We punched students' tickets to verify they had completed a quarter-mile lap around the playground for The Mileage Club.
